Let the Building Begin!

Back in September I shared that we would be building our own home.  5 months later, we are actually doing it!

We went a few weeks ago to Opelika to the builders--we chose America's Home Place--and finalized the house plans and signed the contract.  The house plan I mentioned in my first post was not what we went with.  Over the last 5 months I had changed my mind SEVEN times but the plan we finally decided on is absolutely perfect :-)

The name of the plan is the "Auburn" which we thought was fitting since we are big fans of Auburn University.  Here is the actual plan before we made any changes.

We chose to remove the garage and bring that side of the house out a few feet to meet with the edge of the dining room.  That increased our bedroom and closet slightly, and increased our laundry room and bathroom quite a bit.  We were able to make room for a small linen closet in our bathroom; room for dual sinks; and we made the toilet closet a little wider.  We walled off the "living room" and cut a door on the other side (across from the bathroom) and that room will be our guest bedroom/office/playroom.  Sam thinks that is his room. We are not doing the fireplace or the outside deck. After our changes, the home becomes 4-bedroom/2-bath with an eat-in kitchen, separate dining room, and great room.  It is just under 2000 square feet. It's hard to tell but this shows what it will look like after the changes we made.
We haven't received the final draft yet, thus the red lines everywhere :-)
Where the house will be placed.
We had our site evaluation and chose the exact location of the house and then talked water, power, septic tank, etc.  Some things we are doing (power, water meter) and some things they are doing (gravel, septic tank).  We still have a lot of clearing and grading to do so actual building probably won't start until May but once they get started, it only takes about 6 weeks to complete the home.  We should be in our new home in July :-)

March 6th I get to go pick out colors, flooring, cabinets, counter tops, faucets, fixtures, appliances, etc., etc., etc.  It is a little overwhelming but I know that in the end, everything about that house and in that house will be exactly what we want!!
