Sam's Allergies

Remember how I mentioned that Sam has this rash that occurs every now and then?  Well we usually take him to the vet and he gets a shot in the butt and some antibiotics or steroids and it eventually goes away.  And we always wash him with medicated shampoo to try and deter the rash from appearing more often.

Recently his rash developed again and I tried giving him Benadryl for a week to see if that would help.  It kept him from scratching himself all the time but the rash didn't look any better and it wasn't disappearing.  Back to the vet we went!  (We are regulars there...they know us all by name...I can't figure out if that is a good thing or a bad thing...)

Dr. King examined his rash again and told me again that it isn't as bad as he has seen before.  He praised me for watching Sam so well and taking such wonderful care of him.  He said most people wouldn't even bother bringing in their animal until the rash had completely taken over their body.  I am a proactive parent and I can't stand to see something wrong with my little pooch.  We discussed what may be causing his rash again.  Dr. King said we have successfully ruled out scabies, parasites, etc (thank God), and the next thing to rule out is a food allergy.

He said dogs frequently can be allergic to the products used in generic dog food.  We have always fed Sam Purina Puppy Chow and Dr. King assured me that was a good choice for an average dog, but apparently Sam isn't your average dog.  So we purchased some prescription food and treats and Sam is to be on this strict rabbit and potato dog food for 8 weeks.  If, after 8 weeks, he is not better then we will re-assess his rash and he will most likely have to be put on a daily allergy pill for an allergen to something in the environment.

So far he LOVES his new dog food and his rash is already looking better.  It isn't as red and inflamed as it usually is and he hasn't been scratching at himself as often.  Apparently my little puppy has taken after me and is allergic to common food!
